There are many benefits to doing online courses. Online courses offer flexibility, lower costs and the freedom to study from the comfort of your own home. They are an excellent option for those who want to learn a new skill, change career paths or improve your career prospects. The great news is there are lots of online courses that are actually free of charge. In this article, we will share with you some online courses you can do for free. 

1. Yale University – The Science of Wellbeing 

Originally taught by Yale psychology professor Laurie Santos, this course consists of video lectures, optional readings and a series of challenges designed to boost your own happiness and wellbeing. The course description reads, “As preparation for these tasks, Professor Laurie reveals misconceptions about happiness, annoying features of the mind that lead us to think the way we do, and the research that can help us change. You will ultimately be prepared to successfully incorporate a specific wellness activity into your life.” The course takes around 20 hours to complete and a certificate is awarded upon completion. 

2. Skillshare – How to Create a Successful Side Project 

Skillshare is essentially an online learning community for creatives. Whether you are looking to become an artist, writer, animator or web developer, there is a great range of online classes to help you succeed. One that could be beneficial for people from many walks of life is ‘How to Create a Successful Side Project’. Taught by designer and illustrator Andy J Pizza, the class enables you to determine your creative goals and come up with a simple strategy for achieving them. In six straightforward steps, you will be able to define what a creative career means to you, set goals to get you to where you want to go, establish small steps to get you started, gain promotion and marketing strategies that work and analyse your progress to make sure you are on the right track. 

3. Stanford University – Child Nutrition and Cooking 

This free online course is taught by Maya Adams of Stanford University. It requires a small commitment of two to four hours per week. Participants will explore what constitutes a healthy diet for adults and children in addition to how to prepare simply, tasty home-cooked meals. Elements of the course include: what constitutes a balanced meal; why home cooking matters; sustainable eating and labels; and allergies and taste.  

4. Trinity College Dublin, Future Learning – An Introduction to Radiation Oncology: From Diagnosis to Survivorship 

In this course, you will hear stories from patients who have gotten radiation therapy as part of their treatment and follow radiation therapy from a patient’s first contact with media professionals through to treatment and recovery. You will also identify facts and myths related to radiation therapy treatment as well as discuss the roles of healthcare professionals involved in radiation therapy. The course runs for around two weeks and requires roughly four hours of study per week. 

5. The Open University – Simple Coding 

This online course at the Open University runs for two weeks and provides an introduction to concepts, jargon and skills of coding. Upon completion, you will gain an understanding of how to use the programming language ‘Phython’ to produce code, comprehend the sequences of instructions in Python programmes in addition to understanding repetition in Python programming language. A range of activities and course quizzes will help you to understand the practical side of coding and at the end, you will earn a free statement of participation.
