Learn the basics of Cyber security and Data Protection as it relates to you in your daily life. The course will be delivered in a safe, easy to understand, jargon free environment.

• We will discuss the differences in cyber security and data protection and the simple steps you can take to safeguard your digital data and devices.
• We will look at how your information is collected and used online, when it is safe to share and when it is not. Fun and interactive hands-on class where students will search and use tools to discover what information is publicly available on them/family/friends and a look at various tools to use when discovering this info.
• You will learn where to look for help if in doubt and what to do if your device or data has been compromised. What to do if you have been hacked. Recovering from a compromised situation. Proactive steps that can be taken to minimise the effect. How can I recover from ransomware?
• How to improve your security posture – getting the basic’s right.
• You will learn all about cookies, tracking, reasons why information is collected, how much of it is collected without your knowledge and how it can be used / shared once given away.
• We will look at technical measures you can take to protect yourself and how to be proactive against potential threats. Explanation of what is malware (Ransomware, spyware, viruses, worms), what is a phishing attack, password and identify theft. Who are the bad guys and who is behind the attacks?
• What information is OK to share and with who? Verifying authenticity of the data collector or data processor.
• Look at tools and software available to help protect you online. Alternatives to commonly available applications and software which are more privacy orientated.
• Towards the latter stages of the course we will look at any specific areas of concern identified by the group during the course.
• The course will be delivered using a mixture of printed materials, online resources, real world examples and open lectures with Q&A.
